It is hard being three, I'm sure. Over the past few weeks Kitty has
taken to crying hysterically and running upstairs whenever something
vaguely upsetting happens. Yesterday, I made the kids quesadillas for
lunch. I had described it to Kitty as sort of a grilled cheese... only
on tortillas. After I presented hers to her, I turned around towards
the sink when I heard Kitty muttering something to the effect of, "I
want a REAL grilled cheese!" I managed to catch the tail end of her
throwing her quesadilla in to the garbage. I flipped and said, "We DO
NOT THROW OUT FOOD I JUST MADE FOR YOU!!" Kitty burst in to tears and
ran upstairs crying. I decided not to go after her as I was sure she'd
be back down soon. Half an hour later I found her sound asleep in her
bed.
Today at lunchtime Kitty requested that she be allowed to
spread some strawberry jam on bread to eat. She worked fervently for
some time and stopped twice to have her hands wiped off. When she was
done, she had a very well covered piece of bread. She walked over to
the fridge and said, "Okay, what will I have for lunch?" I told her,
"You just made what you will be eating for lunch. You WANTED to make
that for lunch." The tears came, she ran out of the room. I said to
Jack, "Well, this is the second day in a row that Kitty has cried about
lunch." He said, "Maybe if you don't use your angry voice she won't
cry." Wise words from my young man.
In other news, Jack has taken to
shortening everyone's name. He's been calling Kitty 'Kit' for a few
days (I have called her 'Kit' interchangeably with 'Kitty' for some
time now) and today he started calling me 'Mom' instead of 'Mommy.'
After the third or fourth time he said it, I asked him, "Why aren't you
calling me 'Mommy' anymore?" He said, "I just like the sound of 'Mom.'"
I said, "Well, it makes me a little sad because I love it when you call
me 'Mommy.'" He replied, "I'll still call you 'Mommy' sometimes... but
I'll call you 'Mom' too." Oh, the last traces of my little boy are fast
disappearing. Thank goodness he still likes to cuddle with me before
bedtime.
